METAON (2006-2008)

State of the art in multimedia technology focuses in managing data collected from various sources, including documents, images, video, and speech. Therefore the effective management, analysis and mining of such heterogeneous data requires the combination of various techniques.

The core objective is to construct and integrate semantically rich metadata collections extracted from documents images and linguistic resources, to facilitate intelligent search and analysis. The proposed MetaOn framework involves, ontology-based information extraction and data mining, semi-automatic construction of domain specific ontologies, content-based image indexing and retrieval, and metadata management. The Hellenic history has been chosen as a challenging application case study.

WORBIS (FP6 not funded project)

The WORBIS is an ambitious project that aims to build intra-enterprise collaboration services that contribute to the following Key Enterprise Benefits:

To an enhanced operational and strategic decision making for the Virtual Organization (VO), ensuring enhanced competitiveness and profitability
To a rapid and reliable formation of collaborative consortia to exploit product opportunities.
To explore new business areas and reorganise existing business processes.
To monitor business change in order to support dynamic business process management.
WORBIS scientific and technical perspectives will contribute directly or indirectly to the top-level and medium-level management of small-medium enterprises (SMEs), through WORBIS knowledge representation and knowledge acquisition services for enterprise networks. For this, we will develop methodologies enhancing knowledge for collaboration, by means of computational intelligence process discovery methodologies in order to deliver direct benefits to the enterprise and the VO. More precisely, the WORBIS domain ontology system will make use of the VO formation knowledge, the partner selection knowledge and the enterprise core competence. This temporal sensitive, ontological knowledge will be part of the enabling technology and also a foundation to knowledge-oriented collaboration. In parallel and interconnected, the WORBIS process knowledge discovery will make use of the VO operations management knowledge and the partner selection knowledge. In conformance with the Enterprise Interoperability Research Roadmap, to assist the top-level and medium-level management, the WORBIS will provide:

Knowledge Representation Models. Our research will provide novel methodologies, using the XML-Petri nets paradigm for the acquisition and exploitation of VO knowledge from disparate sources.
Knowledge Interoperability. Our knowledge oriented technologies will be interfaced with enterprise information systems to provide an enhanced performance in VO decision making at the operational level.
Knowledge Representation technologies. Through its temporal ontology management and integration tools, the WORBIS will address procedures that support knowledge management which will ensure the separating of the collaborative knowledge from the enterprise internal knowledge. Additionally via ontology evolution techniques will monitor business change.
Acquisition of knowledge. The WORBIS computational intelligent knowledge discovery system will contribute to the acquisition and structuring of enterprise knowledge as well as acquisition of VO knowledge by means of advanced data mining techniques.
Symbolic and visual representation of processes. A significant contribution of WORBIS, will be the development of technologies that will aid enterprises in the representation of their internal functional processes so as to facilitate enterprise interoperability
Hence, the key benefits of WORBIS can be summarised as follows.
An open-architecture, decision support service for the management of SMEs will be produced. The assistance that the system will provide, it will screen the intra-enterprise workflows. The WORBIS output will be consisted of (a) symbolic and visual representations of the underlying intra-enterprise processes in XML-Petri nets and (b) the temporal process ontology, which will be based on VO knowledge and it will be derived from current and previous collaboration experience, as well as from publicly knowledge of best practice. This knowledge-driven guidance of the strategic and operational decision making for the collaborative workflows will lead to a reduced risk of costly decision conflicts of the member of the VO. Additionally, the open-architecture computational intelligent data mining technology of WORBIS that will be applied across shared VO information spaces will resolve specific problems and generate new knowledge. The resulted process knowledge will be of primary importance for the evolution of enterprise networks and the integration of knowledge for SMEs

DIAXORON

The proposed project aims to develop a presentation model of spatiotemporal variations, which focuses on the representation of boundaries (natural, administrative and / or virtual - coastline, borders, spreading phenomenon) and on their variation during specific intervals of time, incorporating metadata relative to the documentation of these variations. Specifically, the program aims, by combining a set of innovative technologies and methodologies , to satisfy demands of academic and research community by providing a representation model of the natural, historical and socio-economic area and allowing the visual performance of boundaries to their development over time.
The result of the project is a database developed on an integrated management of spatial information, which the user can retrieve (a) At different geographical scales (b) According to time data, (c) According to themes, and finally (d) By combining all of the above mentioned. At the same time the retrieved spatial information will be characterized according to the degree of documentation and reliability through a model of semantic set-up ,the application of which in a particular cognitive field will result in the creation of a documentation and reliability indicator.
